Conference Update!

The Camp Season is quickly coming to an end and we do hope it was a safe, successful and FUN summer for all!  We have much to share with folks, so please do keep reading to the end… and please share with other staff members as you wish!

ACA Southeastern Camping Conference Update !  As reported earlier this summer, the Fall Conference will now be held at the Marriot Executive Park in Charlotte , NC .  We are pleased to announce the price for rooms is $119 night for a single/double!  For more information about the hotel, our special programs, and how to register, check out the website at http://www.acasoutheastern.org/conf/2006.php.  We have great sessions being offered, opportunities to talk with other camp professionals and opportunities to play!  Don’t miss out on this great educational event!

Need a little Help?   ACA Southeastern wants to let you know there is financial assistance available for any member to attend the Fall Conference (or other educational opportunities).  Basic requirements include: ACA membership, a strong commitment to the camping profession and a willingness to write a short article to share with others about the event.  An application can be found at http://acacamps.org/southeastern/ and, to be considered for the Fall Conference, must be returned no later than Friday, August 18.  Recipients will be notified no later than August 25.

Basic Camp Director ’s Course ACA Southeastern and the Calvin Center (Hampton , GA ) are excited to be the host of a Basic Camp Director’s Course. This is a great educational offering for newer camp directors, assistant directors and other camp professionals who just want to learn more!  Dates of the course are December 2 – 6, 2006 ; cost of the course is: $320/$370 members/non-members.  Room and board is additional. For full information and a registration information check:  http://www.acacamps.org/csv.cgi?data=bcdc.csv&template=bcdc.htm

For camps being visited in 2007!  All camps going through an accreditation visit must have an individual attend a Standards Course who will: 1) assist in the preparations for the visit AND 2) be on-site during the visit. The first of these courses is being offered Monday, September 25 in Charlotte, NC just prior to the ACA Southeastern Camping Conference (same site).   We anticipate the course will start at 9 am and run through 1 pm .  All camps scheduled for an accreditation visit will receive additional information and the information will be posted on the Section website by early August.  Additional Standards Courses will be offered Section wide through out the year.  We are in the process of setting up that schedule.  Remember… the Revised Standards will be in effect for the 2007 Visit Year and can be viewed at: http://www.acacamps.org/accreditation/06revised_standards.pdf.  New “Standards Books” will be available in the fall and will be provided to each camp the year prior to their scheduled visit. Visitors will receive the updated book at the Visitor’s Update (dates to be determined).

Section and National Board Nominations: ACA Southeastern is now seeking nominations for the following Section Board positions:  President-Elect, Vice President (3 year term), Secretary (1 year term), Treasurer (3 year term), South Carolina District Chair (3 year term), Florida District Chair (3 year term) and one Council of Delegate Member (1 year term).  Please contact Debbie Knight at debbiek168@yahoo.com or complete the nominations form at: http://www.acacamps.org/southeastern/members/board_nomination_07.php. For additional information on either Section or National Board Nominations, please contact the Section Office.

Section Awards (Individual and Program): We KNOW there are many dedicated people who contribute a great deal and some incredible programs happening!  Now is your opportunity to help appropriately recognize them. Check out the awards available at: http://www.acacamps.org/southeastern/nominations.php

Celebrate the Life of Jim Bennett:  Jim Bennett, owner/director of Camp Woodmont in Cloudland, GA (along with his wife Jane) lost his battle with cancer in early July.  A celebration of his life was held July 11 and was attended by many members of his camp “family.”  ACA Southeastern was well represented at the service.  Cards can be sent to:  Camp Woodmont , 2339 Welton Place , Dunwoody , GA 30338 .

Congratulations and Farewell!   The ACA Southeastern Section Board is prematurely saying “good-bye” to Kat Shreve and Donnie Bain as career moves make it difficult for them to serve on the Section Board. Donnie is now the Headmaster at a private school in Western NC and Kat will be joining the ACA National Staff in their professional development area (she will remain in GA and, of course, will be one of the Auctioneers in Charlotte !) We are lucky in that both of them will remain in the area and will contribute as visitors!  Best of luck to Donnie and Kat and thanks for your many years of service to ACA Southeastern!

We hope to see many of you in Charlotte , September 25- 27, 2006 for a GREAT Conference… Discover the Possibilities!
